Class Guideline

Welcome to Dharma Yoga By Junko and the beginning of what could be a lifetime labor of love.
With a dedicated yoga practice and through the study of yoga we can guarantee you one thing,
a life changing experience. I cannot say however how your life will change
but gradually it will change and for the better.
There are a few things you should know about yoga, yoga101 if you will, that we do discuss but unfortunately rarely have the time to go into completely.
 Starters
Firstly what to do before your yoga classes.  Come to class on an empty stomach only eating at least an hour and a half before class. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move it such as shorts or t shirts. Drink all the water you want before class but try to not drink any during the class or afterwards for at least a half an hour. Part of the benefit of yoga is detox and to assist in that water shouldn’t be consumed during class. If you feel dehydrated or start to notice a headache then of course drink some water. But if there is no problem, try and avoid it.
  Breath Bandhas and Drishti
Now these are big topics and can hardly be done justice here. But a quick overview will give you some idea of what he teacher is talking about should they be mentioned in a class.
-          Breath is the most important factor in yoga. All breathing should be done through the nose and in a calm, slow, relaxed manner. If at any point during the class your breath becomes forced, shallow, or choppy, something is wrong and perhaps you are straining the body more then it should be.
-          Bandhas are energy locks in the body and there are three main ones which are used for various reasons. The simplest way to engage your band has is to slightly lift the base of the body up and pull the navel slightly in and up. These will deep energy flowing in the right direction throughout  your yoga practice.
-          Drishti is simply a gazing point. There are several commonly used drishtis including your nose, third eye, and index finger. By staring at a fixed point it’s easier to control your mind and keep yourself inwardly focused.
  Silence is a virtue
Please be virtuous. There are some common yoga courtesies that you may not be aware of have you not practiced before. Yoga is a very focused practice and it is important for yourself and others to find that focus. Distractions like cell phones and outside noses hinder that focus.
Please when entering a yoga class remain quiet especially if you arrive a bit late. Cell phones should be turned to silent mode and ideally left in the locker room. If you need to pick up an emergency call please keep the phone on silent in class and should you receive a call please make sure you are well away from the classroom before you start to speak.
If the class is in the process of chanting the opening or closing Oms please do not enter or leave the classroom.
  Late arrival
Finally if you arrive very late to a yoga class please consider taking the next class. During the first twenty minutes of class is usually when the body starts warming up making the later deeper asana possible. If you arrive late and the body is not adequately prepared you are more susceptible to injury.  And we really don’t want anyone to get injured.
If you have any injuries or any physical ailments such as high or low blood pressure or if you are pregnant please kindly inform the teacher prior to class starting. If you are uncomfortable mentioning this in front of the entire class please feel free to bring the teacher aside and mention it. It’s the instructor’s job to make sure you get through the class safely. But first and foremost enjoy your practice.
